Puerto Vallarta, Aqui Me Voy

By the time you read this I will be cruising comfortably at or near 36,000 feet on my way to sun-splashed Puerto Vallarta where the city never sleeps and all the boys are negotiable. Interestingly, about a week ago, I found this short article by Daniel Drolet of the Ottawa Citizen about this popular gay destination spot:

"Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico’s west coast, has a well-deserved reputation as a choice destination for gay and lesbian travellers. But Don Pickens, owner of PV’s Casa Cupula, says too many of those travellers shuttle back and forth between beach, bars and restaurants and don’t take the time to venture farther afield. If travellers to Puerto Vallarta ask him where to go to see some natural beauty, Pickens directs them to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, in the Sierra Madre about 45 minutes south of town. (See www.vbgardens.org/about-us/ for information.) The gardens house, among other things, Mexico’s national orchid collection — something Pickens says visitors should not miss."

Well, as it turns out, that is precisely where Chris and I will be staying and precisely where, on one of our jaunts, we plan on going. So, not only will we be seeing this:

Television Enforces Gay Stereotypes

While there is reason to celebrate the increase in LGBT characters on television and cable series, quantity appears not to trump quality in the medium's offerings:

 

"The majority of the gay characters on TV are stereotypical. They are depicted in a stable relationship or as the faithful, flamboyant side kick. Lesbians on TV are typically very feminine, and their sexuality is often overplayed. Bisexual characters are usually depicted as having had some kind of relationship with the same sex in the past, but tend to end up in a heterosexual relationship. This formulaic and predictable portrayal of gays on television is quickly becoming rather tiresome. The focus when writing these characters should be quality, not quantity. It is time to start adding real depth to these characters."

I wrote about this at length back in April, 2012 and have long argued that the roles we as a community are given are written by and for white heterosexuals. It is not enough to say to simply have our presence felt and until we are presented as three dimensional objects, I hardly see reason to celebrate the increase in numbers.

Boca Raton Get's County Contract And Maintains Policy of Discrimination

In what was supposed to be a win-win for the LGBT citizens of Boca Raton, Florida has turned into an epic fail after the city negotiated a waste management contract with Palm Beach county and managed to circumvent anti-discrimination laws at the same time. Reporting on News Channel 5:

"The contract was approved without discussion after a month of controversy about the city's equal opportunity policy. The language, however, is not what you would expect in a 51-page contract that will pay Boca Raton about $235,000 a year to participate in a countywide system of removing hazardous waste. Boca stopped short of fully adopting the county's policy. But this decision provided the understanding to smooth over the differences between the county's equal opportunity policy and the city's, which does not cover discrimination on the basis of sexual preference, gender identity or gender expression."

The Palm Beach County Human Rights Commission was disappointed as well, recognizing the obvious: the city will take the money but will not be "boxed" in by outside forces determining their city's policy directed at the LGBT population.

Nation's First Ever Gay Care Center For LGBT Seniors Opens in South Florida

With nation's LGBT Boomer population expected to swell to six million by 2020, SunServe, the nation's first every gay care center
has opened in Ft. Lauderdale:

"A large LGBTQ population has chosen the greater Fort Lauderdale area to live in and retire to. We felt our seniors should not go back into the closet as they aged and needed day care services," SunServe Executive Director Mark Ketcham said. "We created a center that is warm and welcoming to all people. It is aimed toward the LGBTQ population but we have and will continue to accept all people for day care services."

The ranks of Baby Boomers, those born between 1946 and 1963, are expected to produce entire laundry lists of services required to meet the needs of this hugely diverse and rapidly aging generation. 

"Many of these Baby Boomers spend a lot of their time alone, without family or caregivers to accompany or care for them. Others may have caregivers who are unable to give them the around-the-clock care that they need due to their own jobs or personal business. In the LGBT community, many seniors in need of daytime or respite care have no option but to attend day care programs that are not open to or understanding of the special relationships and needs of LGBT seniors."

But Sun Serve hopes to change that by, among other things, providing gay seniors the social interaction necessary for most to lead productive lives well into their golden years. It also allows members of their families the needed respite time.

Today in Tumblr: Bulging Speedos

In 1910, Scotsman Alexander MacRae moved to Sydney, Australia and founded MacRae and Company Hosiery, a small sock company. During World War I, MacRae's products were in high demand, allowing the business owner to expand into underwear under the name 'Fortitude.' In 1928, he held a naming contest among his employees. The winning entry, "Speed on in your Speedos," led to what we now know and commonly masturbate over as Speedos.

And while it takes a certain sort of physical perfection to do justice to the Speedo, we can't help but admire both the form and the admirers of the form. Such is the case with today's Tumblr feature: BulgingSpeedos.tumblr.com.

It's not the most amazing Tumblr site devoted to the male and it won't win any awards for aesthetics, but the creator's love of the Speedo comes through in example after example and isn't limited to the white race.

Iraqi Witch Hunt

I'm finally getting around to posting on this expertly reported (but brutal) accounting of the horrors gay Iraqis face now that they are, you know, liberated.

These four videos by the BBC recount in graphic detail how gay men specifically are routinely rounded up and murdered in what are known as "honor killings." Even a whisper campaign about one's sexuality can prove deadly. And unlike the tough talk coming out of Hillary Clinton's State Department about African injustices towards their LGBT communities, the United States, England and the rest of the Western World have remained shamefully silent on this issue.

In part one, we meet Ahmed, Nancy and Allou - pseudonyms all - who recount how they have been repeatedly raped at checkpoints, have been threatened with death if they don't recant their homosexuality and change their orientations and have essentially lived in isolation and fear, seldom risking going outside.

In part two, the BBC takes a look at how militia groups, officially outlawed, work jointly with the Iraqi police in their efforts to scrub the country of the "undesirables."

Part three examines how the government is complicit in these crimes, a government back by the United States government.

And in part four, the BBC examines the role of conservative religious leaders who, unlike their counterparts in Lebanon, Iran and even Saudi Arabia pursue the LGBT community with far more gusto and vigilance.

It's an excellent series of videos that I highly recommend you watch. But you've been warned, they are also incredibly disturbing.
