Wilheim Reich: The Inventor Of Sex

Things happen in cycles. Shortly after World War I, with the advent of Freud and his psychoanalysis, sex seemed to be dryly reduced into one of two causes: an overbearing mother or a distant father. (Sound familiar, my gay friends?) But before Freud managed to get a stranglehold on the sexual libido of a sex-curious public, another man, Wilhelm Reich, was busy at work on a device which he hoped would hold out much greater promises in explaining the underpinnings of a perpetually sex-starved public: the orgasmatron. 

Now, granted, many of you are already familiar with the contraption if you've been lucky enough to see Woody Allen's 1973 comedy, "Sleeper," where the idea of an orgasmatron, a metallic, spherical object is used to induce these incredible orgasms without the aid of another person. But long before Allen and his creative genius were inventing such things, a German researcher by the name of Wilhelm Reich, was actually postulating on the idea that such a thing exists.

This, of course, was pre-Freud, when Europe was in the throws of its own sexual revolution. Frank Wedekind, the German playwright has just written "Spring Awakening, " Arthur Schnitzler had just penned "La Ronde" exalting the joys of one night stands, while Otto Weininger's 1903 "Sex and Character" was proposing new, and very novel ideas about the division of labor based on sex drive.

But it is  Reich that writer Chritopher Turner turns his attention to in his new book, "ADVENTURES IN THE ORGASMATRON: Wilhelm Reich and the invention of sex," that bares looking at in James M. Murphy's critique to be found in the Times Literary Supplement:

"Only twenty-two years old and still in medical school when welcomed into Freud’s circle, Reich was soon regarded as the most promising of the new recruits. But he could not ignore the political revolutions boiling up in Central Europe after the war. He joined the Austrian and later the German Communist Party and threw himself into the work of the German Association for Proletarian Sexual Politics (Sexpol), hoping to use psychoanalysis as a means to alter society rather than as a therapy to rescue neurotic individuals one at a time. At Berggasse 19, such “political fanaticism”, as Freud’s biographer Ernest Jones described it, was seen as tainted with the heresy that mental life was a construct of society, rather than the inevitable working out of conflicted infantile sexuality. Freud would later argue in Civilization and its Discontents (1930) that the best we can aim for is to manage the tension created by libidinal energy: neurotic illness would not be cured by the “free living out” of sexuality, the gospel which Reich would go on to preach throughout the rest of his life in what Christopher Turner describes as an effort to “reconcile psychoanalysis and Marxism”. "

I guess you'll just have to read the book to find out what exactly the parameters where in Reich's effort to reconcile the schools of thought but I suspect that anyone creative enough to invent an 'orgasmatron' - or a reasonable facsimile of it - deserves a look.

I Am Who I Want To Be: Sex Change Operations Happening With Younger And Younger Kids

For the parent facing a gay child with trepidation and disgust, it might be easy to console oneself with the idea that, "it's just a phase." But what happens when the child - your child - comes to you as says, "I was born in the wrong body?"

Well, increasingly, it's happening and the phenomeonon is getting more and more publicity, some favorable, some not so much. This week, CBS News featured a story on teen and pre-teen children who are having sex-change operations. In one Boston Hospital alone, the facility has seen a four-fold rise in the number of under-18 kids walking in, stating their desire to change genders.  But outside that liberal bubble, doctors from as far away as Texas and Los Angeles are seeing requests for gender reassignment surgery tick up.

And the fact that our media is able to provide positive, affirming stories of the young men and women who have successfully treated their "disorder," - on sites like YouTube - are only reinforcing positive perceptions for those very same teens:

"The drugs used by the clinics are approved for delaying puberty in kids who start maturing too soon. The drugs' effects are reversible, and Spack said they've caused no complications in his patients. The idea is to give these children time to mature emotionally and make sure they want to proceed with a permanent sex change. Only 1 of the 97 opted out of permanent treatment, Spack said. Kids will more easily pass as the opposite gender, and require less drastic treatment later, if drug treatment starts early, Spack said. For example, boys switching to girls will develop breasts and girls transitioning to boys will be flat-chested if puberty is blocked and sex-hormones started soon enough, Spack said."

It's enlightening to see there are supportive parents out there, groundbreakers in their own right, who are willing to put their child's happiness before their own and an indication of just how far, and how quickly, we are moving past outdated stereotypes of gender identity.

England's So So Gay Magazine Explores Sexual Racism

It's hard, laughable almost, to take seriously a magazine's intent to thoughtfully explore the subject of sexual racism among today's LGBT community (given how few ethnicities and races appear in the edition this story made headlines). But it is a serious subject and one, no matter what the editor's intent, should be looked at with more frequency and not less.

Sexual racism is a very serious problem in the GLBT community.

Andy Wasley has a piece entitled "Professional Prejudice" in the most recent online edition of England's So So Gay Magazine. It's a look at the 'not-into-black-guys-sorry-just-a-preference' that swept the stomping ground of primarily gay males looking for a hook-up or more.  Andy mainly focuss on the experiences and rumination of Manesh, a 28-year-old man from Surrey who is half-Sri Lankan:

"‘On the internet, communication isn’t face-to-face, and that makes it a lot easier to say something that’s hurtful. On the scene in general, there’s a culture that makes it okay to say “I’m looking for this, I’m not looking for that.”  That sort of turns people into tick boxes.  I think that makes people less aware of the impact of those views.’  He suggests that people could prevent offence by expressing themselves differently. ‘I can’t say that everyone has to find me attractive, but they could put things positively. Phrase it as a preference for something, rather than an exclusion of something else. It’s nicer to read a preference for something than something negative about me, but I also think that’s actually more realistic.’"

Wasley goes on to quote Gaydar and Grindr, two of the most popular mobile hook up sites with predominantly white men and whom issue stock 'we-don't-tolerate-racism' responses without going on to discuss how that has manifested itself.

Of course, that's the writers job, and in this case I think Wasley has failed to really delve into the causes and motivations of the phenomenon. After all, we're not born saying: "I'm not into black guys." Where does he think that comes from? What can we do to change that? How do we combat the 'it's-just-preference' mindset.

And until Mr. Wasley does, I'll stand by their right to call themselves so-so.

PeterFever's Peter Le Is Back With What Joe Biden Would Call A Pretty Big Fucking Deal

 

As I have told Peter on any number of occasions, I don't see this strapping, handsome, well-endowed Asian male on pictures taped to my shower wall while masturbating, so much as I see him as my friend. Peter Le: I'm excited to be back.

MOC: So much has changed since we last spoke. I think you were on your way to Japan to photograph the island and, if judging by your Cybersocket appearance, wore a shirt about two sizes smaller.

Peter Le: Japan was one of the best experiences of my life. It really allowed me to gain a new perspective on a part of Asia I'd never seen before. And I'm always looking for a new detergent to try to help me shrink my shirts up. I'd rather be shirtless but then there's that whole "public indecency" thing to worry about.

 

MOC: So tell us, what did you gain through your travels?

Peter Le: It was definitely a culture shock. Everyone I met over there was so enthusiastic about trying to communicate with me and help me connect with their culture. But, at the same time, it's a very conservative culture. I learned a lot about how hard it is to be gay over there and that really took me by surprise. It felt like, in some ways, Japan is socially where America was in the 50's. Not to mention they made me cover up my tattoo when I was working out at the gym over there. Gold's Gym! My old American stomping grounds. haha

MOC: Wow. Why?

Peter Le: Well...There's this idea that homosexuality is something you'll just snap out of one day. Like some of my friends over there told me that their parents can't accept their sexual identity. They think it's a phase they'll get over and then get back to finding a wife and starting a traditional family. Gay bars and clubs are very underground, too. There's nothing over there like SF's Castro. And I was spending time with friends who were very connected to the gay scene.
 

MOC: But why the tattoo?

Peter Le: Tattoos are seen as a statement that you don't want to be a part of the group. It's a pretty in your face thing usually thought to be a sign that you're part of a gang or the mob. They even had it written up in the gym conduct code that if you had one you had to keep it underwraps while at the gym. I ended up having to wrap bandaging tape around my arm just to lift some weights.
Being American wasn't an excuse I guess.

 

MOC: I'm curious, too, how did people know you were gay? You're don't exactly scream: homosexual!

Peter Le: Well, and it's not that I exactly am 100% out there gay, either. I have friends all over the world and my friends in Japan knew I'd have a good time out at the gay clubs.
 

MOC: Well, I'm just glad I only need to fly to San Francisco to see you and not Japan. That can add up!

Peter Le: Tell me about it, my bank account is still hurting haha. It was worth it though!
 

MOC: I'm sure. So, let's talk about you're big news. But before we do, I wan't to talk to you about some of the changes you've made to you site...

Peter Le: Go for it.
 

MOC: For one, you've added models. And the first model you added was none other than Asia's biggest straight male porn star: Keni Styles. How did that all come about?

Peter Le: Honestly, it wasn't that hard... Keni is a really awesome guy who I admire so much. And as much as I admire him, he admires my site's mission to show Asian male sexual power and prowess. When I told him I wanted him to help me lead the way to showing a different kind of Asian male in the adult community he was on board. I owe him big time too. After he jumped on it I started getting tons of subimissions from other models wanting to help break all the pre-existing stereotypes about us out there.
 

MOC: How much was he paid?

Peter Le: He, and all my models, get standard industry rates.

 

MOC: So, he wasn't paid any more or any less?

Peter Le: No, it was more about he and I just clicking, having the same vision, and him wanting to be a part of something.
 

MOC: In a blog post I wrote about that appearance, I was somewhat critical because I felt that while you're are trying - admirably, I'll add - to showcase Asian male sexuality, you chose a heterosexual male. How do you counter that criticism?

Peter Le: What's it got to do with his sexuality? Honestly? I showcase men who I feel have strength, personality, share my vision, and have got a great look. I don't think I'd be helping to break stereotypes if I started excluding people or being selective based on sexuality. Particalularly because I feel that sexuality is so much more fluid than many people's rigid view of it today. Also, just because he's a straight guy it doesn't make him any less sexy in my eyes.
 

MOC: Some would argue, much in the way they did when, say, someone like Reese Rideout won a gay magazine's prize for top gay man of the year, that it sends out the wrong signal to gay men that are looking for positive gay affirmations?

Peter Le: I want to be all inclusive. I think Keni is a great guy, who to the best of my knowledge, supports the gay community and definitely supports trying to promote a positive image of Asian masculinity. He's not my only model, too. I have lots of amazing guys on the site now and I can tell you that the strictly homosexual models far out number those who aren't. I'm trying to send a message that every Asian man can be strong, sexual, confident. Keni is a notable person in my industry who is doing the same and as a fan of his I wanted him to be a part of the project. But, that being said, he's just one piece of the puzzle not the whole thing.

 

MOC: Okay, so let's move on to what I consider - in Joe Biden's now famous words - "a really big fucking deal." Tell us what's going on with PeterFever.com?

Peter Le: That's hard to say in just a few words! I could write you a whole novel based on what I have planned for the future. I always want people to get to the point with me though so I'll get to the point... Two biggest changes this year are that we're going hardcore and opening up a whole livecam aspect too. I'm excited almost more for the livecam because it allows the site to be ten times more interactive and I will personally be available to perform directly for the fans doing live shows.
 
MOC: So, you're going hardcore meaning...?

Peter Le: The site will start featuring videos where the models are going to be doing a variety of sexual acts on eachother, obviously including intercourse.
