2007: The Year in Gay Porn
A murder proceeded by arson is not a particularly positive omen for the year but that's exactly how 2007 unfolded in the Gay Porn Industry. Cobra head Bryan Charles Kocis' charred remains were found at the end of January in his burnt out home in Pennsylvania and shortly afterwards Harlow "The World's Oldest Twink" Cuadra and partner Joe Kerekes were detained and charged. Very ‘Dallas.’ Sickeningly gruesome, for sure. But, still, very ‘Dallas.’ The year also saw studio giant Colt turn 40 proving once again that 40 really is the new 30, 29, 28. Dark Alley Media raised one of several shackles this year with their release of Gaytanamo – a sexual parody loosely based on the infamous detention facility Guantanamo while a poster for the Folsom Street Fair which re-imagined The Last Supper into something just a soupçon less holy than intended caused the normally apoplectic Bill O’Reilly to practically burst an artery on national television. Michelle Malkin (best known as a conservative commentator for Fox) did for the event on her blog what all the Press Releases in the world couldn’t have done. We lost a few of our own this year including Kent North, Danny Roddick and Dekenric Wiley.
Dekenric was executive Vice-President for FlavaWorks and the scant attention his passing received in the porn blogosephora reminded everyone once again how far this industry has to go in achieving parity among competing racial and ethnic minorities. Meanwhile, down in Miami the thermometer inched up on Flavaworks when a local station picked up on the goings-on of the CocoDorm house and like flies to shit, several prominent conservative commentators offered their two cents including former freelance employee Jasmyne "If the KKK wanted to publish my articles...as long as they paid me" Cannick and other like-minded bottom feeders.
The year also saw an unusually frank and judgment-free recognition of The Industry when The New York Times did a seven-page piece on Kink.com.
But all is not bliss. As Claire Hoffman noted on Portfolio.com, The Industry seems ill-prepared for the coming copyright storm which threatens to affect porn in ways that no one seems prepared to deal with. And while Titan may have scored a small victory in rightfully shutting down on online piracy ring this year, one finger does not a dyke contain.
And, finally, in an effort to add one more pretentious, unnecessary awards event to the already overcrowded field of pretentious, unnecessary awards events, I'd like to offer up some nods for people who went beyond the call of porn in 2007. I call them: The 2007 MOC Blog Awardies.
BEST SEX SITE FOR PORN: Fleshbot hands down. Even at its most humdrum, the gang over at FB can sear through the over-hyped, overly self-congratulatory nature of the Porn Industry and make it likable, readable and get's-your-dick-upable.
BEST PORN SITE FOR SEX: Sorry, guys but it's MOC on the mat. While the others talk about it (How fun is that!) I share it. Best part is? It's doesn’t cost you a thing.
BEST WRITERS BLOGGING TODAY: (TIED) I have a very special relationship with Tim so it's hard to separate my feelings for him and my feelings for his work. That's why I showed his work to others and they agreed with me that, yes, Tim is indeed a gifted, poignant writer. Day after day, week after week, month after month, Tim pushes the boundaries of expression forward with his truthful writing on Nakedcamei and makes it, without fail, one of the best blogs period. John Calendo's writing found on Nightcharm is the other. This is one man who can write! And he's part of a larger crew that includes Shawn Baker and others that consistently crank out top-tier intellectual fare. Oh, yes, and the photos aren’t half-bad either.
BEST NEW BLOG: Kcrave. Finally! A blog that appreciates and mimics the best of these, what, Pogs? Blorns? Whatever. Blogs devoted to porn. But it gives the genre a black-and-brown swirl that the world needs more of considering how many of them rarely if ever acknowledge the great work coming out of studios other than those eponymously named, cookie cutter websites.
MOST CURIOUS NEW COMER: That Russian guy, Nickolay Petrov. He's found a new fame and a new attitude in the multitudinous legions of fans that prefer their fantasies served perfectly-coiffed, incredibly pliable, good-humored and ready for a long, long night of fun! Russian go-go dancers just don’t get no respect in Moscow!
UPCOMING TREND: Boyfriends having sex in front of the camera. A return to sexuality. These last seven years have been a boon to white hairless mannequins but it's over. There's a return to affection and a celebration of gay love.
UPCOMING TREND PART 2: Alterntive. Skaters. Guys with lots of tattoos. But especially alternative skaters with lots of tattoos.
A STAR IS BORN: Francois Sagat was everywhere you wanted to be in 2007 and an almost pathological obsession of his every move by The Industry failed to make a dent in his popularity. His welcome is far from over. The question, of course, is whether or not porn will hold the attention of this mercurial Gemini’s interest.
MOST UNDERREPORTED STORY OF 2007: I had mentioned in a previous post that Chi Chi LaRue’s purchase of All World’s Video made her the de facto face of Gay Porn but I forgot she actually purchased the studio LAST year. But there was hardly a peep about the decline in revenue in Pornland because of free content sites. This will be THE issue of 2008.
MOST OVERREPORTED STORY OF 2007: Larry “Wide Stance” Craig. Yes, he’s gay. And, no, we don’t believe you, Larry.

This is random but do you know the last name of Steve, the general manager of Bacchus/Filmco? Bacchus Studios offers many movies with men of color so I thought you may know info. I am trying to find his full name and have only found the initial "B" of his last name. Thanks for any help!
